the way that i do it is that when the game starts, send your peons (workers) to one mineral patch. while they are moving, select 2 of the peons and send them to a different patch. the peons should move to a different patch when the other peons start mining on one. and immediately after that, you should make another peon from the command building unless you are doing the 4-pool build for zerg.
